December has come and it brought one hell of a storm! Right now we’re all snuggled up in a ridiculous amount of blankets with coffee and lots of candles just in case the electricity decides to hide from Storm Desmond (very Irish!).
The wind and rain are trying their hardest to sneak in and while it’s a little scary it sounds pretty amazing. I love the sound of rain, it makes me feel safe and cozy. There’s nothing better than a great book and a giant mug of coffee when the weather is being temperamental (most of the time here in Donegal.)
So here are some of the comics and graphic novels I’ve been loving recently!
This was a birthday present and I’ve honestly read it three times through since receiving it. It had been on my radar for a while but I never got round to picking it up, now that I’ve read it I’m almost cranky with past me who kept saying “eh, maybe next time!”. It’s a collection of five super creepy stories, all wonderfully written, beautifully illustrated and genuinely spine-tingling. I kept forcing myself to stop reading, put it down and walk away because I didn’t want to rush through what I instantly knew would be a new favourite of mine.
Seconds is another one that I’d been putting off for months but then sniffle season arrived and my poor bed-bound snot-monster self was desperately reading anything I could get my hands on. I wasn’t sure what to expect, as a teenager I was a big Brian Lee O’Malley fan but that love fizzled as I got older and dedicated my heart to our lord and savior, Gail Simone. Turns out there must have been a little ember of that fiery O’Malley love hiding somewhere inside me because Seconds brought it roaring back to life. I fell head over heels for this book and lost myself in it entirely. I read it straight through in one sitting then instantly regretted finishing it so fast!
Ok so there’s only one issue so far but I’ve read it so many times there may as well be three or four already! I’m ridiculously excited to see where this story goes, I instantly adored our protagonist Lunella so much that I kind of forgot there was a dinosaur on the way. She’s a perfect addition to the growing list of bad-ass young characters in Marvel’s line up; intelligent, hard working, driven but still a kid. I feel like this might be the next Ms Marvel, and that’s saying something! (P.S. I reviewed this issue here!)
Just when I was starting to feel like it would never arrive, Clean Room #1 hit my pull list like a sledgehammer and sent everything else flying to the sidelines. There are two issues out so far and both have had me on the edge of my seat, holding my breath and sometimes muttering grossgrossgross over and over without even realising. It’s just so damn Gail Simone-y and I can’t get enough.
What have you been reading recently? Let me know!
